We're delighted to announce the arrival of a rather charming lady to our shop...'Raphaela'.  This superb example is French and looking quite resplendent in her 80s period frame.  Ready to hang, she is big and beautiful - perfect to grace the home of anyone with even a smidgen of taste and style.  See her on our 'Welcome' page now - she's on show in the shop and ready to raise temperatures in the shop!

Dr Who New/Missing Adventure Paperbacks

New in this week is our large collection of Dr Who books - they date from the 1990s through to the mid-2000s and cover the first eight doctors.  Most are priced around the £5-7 mark - although we do have some very rare releases which are long out of print.  A few we have put online and can be seen in out 'Library' section; but in total we have just over seventy...so come and check them out.

Fresh in this week is a lot of approximately fifty Dinky/Matchbox models from the 1990s onwards.  There are American cars, sports cars, British favourites, Vans, Land Rovers etc. etc. - plenty to choose from...on view now.

Winter Hours 2015/16

James Bond Poster Prints

We have managed to get our paws on a selection of James Bond movie/film poster prints - mostly these are the lesser seen 'foreign' language versions of the posters - the artwork is often different from the UK/USA versions and the language certainly is!  We have a good range, some are mounted and framed, others are just mounted, ready for framing - sizes vary, but mostly they are approx. 12" x 10"...ideal Christmas presents perhaps?  We have put a few on show in the 'Film/Movie Ephemera' section of the website - some come on in and see what else we have.

The 1980's Revival Continues...

Well, you've got to love it...give in and relive (or enjoy for the first time) some of the wonderful sights and sounds from the fabulous 1980s.  In our reading room you will find some excellent full-colour books, packed full of images of Culture Club/Boy George, Duran Duran and Wham.  Also a 1984 Smash Hits Yearbook (edited of course by Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant).  Then in out Art Department we have just bought in some original Mal Watson 'Athena' prints.  There you will find 'Rare Deal', 'Rare Touch' and 'Bad Girls' all beautifully framed and ready to be enjoyed.  So come on, give and go 80's...you know you want to!

Proud of your town or just looking from a memento of another fabulous trip to the south Devon Coast?  Well our new range of fabulous 19th century Exmouth etchings should be just the ticket.  We have four different views of the town c. 1830s - 1850s; each has been mounted and backed ready for framing and measures a neat 10" x 8"...available now individually for £10 or as a set of four for just £30!

1970s Bang & Olufsen and Roberts Radio...

Just added to our 'Audio Visual' department is a cracking selection of vintage audio equipment.  If you're thinking of heading to the beach this summer, you'll look the retro-business with one of our wood and leather Roberts radios..or if your staying at home, why not set up our truly awesome B&O Beomaster 1000 wooden radio unit with its two Beovox 2600 speakers...that should get everyone up and dancing.

'Silent Screamers' - Terror from the Pre-Talkies!

We've just welcomed some very scary items into our Toy Shop - four 'Silent Screamers', which are wonderfully detailed, highly collectable 6" - 8" vinyl figures (articulated and with great diorama detailing) - all mint and still sealed in their original factory packaging.  From the great producers Mezco/Aztec we have Maria from 'Metropolis' (1926), Dr Caligari from 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari' (1919), Frankenstein's Monster from 'Frankenstein' (1910) and Mr Hyde from 'Dr Jekyl & Mr Hyde' (1920)...great fun!   

John Player Special 1984 Retro Erotic Calendar Prints

Just added to our gallery of lovely vintage erotic images are a complete set of 1984 John Player Special (JPS) calendar prints.  A superb selection of fourteen images, some a little more risque than others, all in fab black and gold colouring - all mounted ready for framing...

Frank Kelly Freas Starblaze Edition Prints...

We've just bought in some truly fab 1970s fantasy artwork...a series of six prints by Frank Kelly Freas which were originally produced as covers for 'Starblaze Edition' books.  They're quirky, with a touch of humour, horror, menace and just a hint of steampunk and gothic fantasy!  We have one copy of each, properly mounted ready for framing...check out our 'Art Gallery' pages for a look or come on in and see them in all their intricate glory.

Local Art for...everybody

Local artist John Vaughan Hill has recently dropped off some his lovely local prints and you can view them now in our new gallery.  We have four different framed pictures each depicting a view of the delightful coast and countryside scenery between here in Exmouth and Sidmouth just down the road and we're sure they won't be hanging around for long. 

'...Three for a Girl...'

Whether thought of as a 'charm', 'tiding', 'gulp' or 'murder' for many the sight of three magpies means only one thing.   We've just bought in this lovely vintage taxidermy display consisting of triple magpies in a lovely wooded setting.   Okay so maybe not to everyone's taste...but if you are a tattooist, part of a coven or just a bit of a Goth at heart this might be something for you.   Come one in and take a look...before it flies away (ow!).

Spring Summer Hours 2015

We're pleased to let everyone know that we shall be returning to seven day opening from the 2nd March.  Monday to Friday hours will be 9.00 'till 16.00 whilst Saturday and Sunday hours will be 10.00 'till 15.00.  All opening hours subject to change...if you're making a special visit to us, drop us an email or call so we can let you know if there are any changes.  Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

We're On The Move...

As a new year starts, so begins a new era for The Velvet Marionette.  Yes, after three and a quarter good years on Chapel Hill we have now decided to move towards the town center and onto High Street...or as the crow flies from Chapel Hill, about thirty yards!

The new shop at 20 High Street, Exmouth, EX8 1NP is coming together nicely and will be opened to the public for the first time on Monday 19th January 2015.

It's looking fab too!  It's larger, lighter, has a really sticky front door and will be packed full of all your old favourites plus an even larger gallery...a huge dedicated space in the shop filled with paintings, prints and other visual delights.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Winter 2014 Opening Hours...

With the clocks soon to go back and the weather on the turn...it's time for us to tweak our opening hours.  From 20th October 2014 until next year sometime, we will be aiming to be open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 16.00; Saturday 9.00 to 14.00 and Sunday...sometimes (basically if it's nice!)  If you're coming to see something or pick something up, just drop us an email or text...Cheers.

Note: sometimes it rains a lot...if we have a lot of stock in the shop ('cos it cannot go outside in the rain) it does make access a little tricky and the shop very packed...but that makes it more fun...right?

Even More Star Wars Diecast...

For all you fans who cannot wait for the new films we have a huge selection of original DeAgostini diecast ships and vehicles from the first six films.  These large ships are highly detailed and come in the their own display cases and most have their accompanying booklets...great stuff.

Vintage 1960s/70s Original Air Travel Prints

Just added a whole bundle of original 1969 - 1971 air travel magazine adverts - all nicely mounted and wrapped ready for framing.  There are some great pictures of some interesting and some now forgotten air liners...We have boxes and boxes of newly arrived prints...more info soon...or come in and have a rummage through...

Dr Who goodies aboard...

We once heard someone say that the best TV shows where the ones you can sing their names along to their title music...try that out and see how many shows it works on.  One of the best of all time of course is Dr Who..try it...go on, it's there on the tip of your brain...Anyway we've got a big old pile of Dr Who toys, games, stickers, mini Daleks, sonics, pots of alien gunk and so on now in the shop - a big old box with more to follow; oh and a load more diecast Star Wars ships...we're just too good to you lot...Open all over the Bank Holiday weekend...then probably having a duvet day on Tuesday...fingers crossed.

Evil Marionettes...

Okay, quick update for all those people (and their kids who go to the school over the road) who are wondering where the evil marionettes have gone...well, it turns out that being evil meant we couldn't trust them to be alone in the shop even for five minutes...we'll be putting up some pictures of them on the website soon and then hopefully someone will take them and give them a new home...perhaps once they're split up they'll be better behaved!

Easter Baskets...

Well they need eggs putting in them!  We've managed to get a small number of brand new wicker baskets...in three different sizes.  Last chance to get them for the kiddies (big or small) and the impending egg hunting bonanza this weekend.  Prices from just a fiver...

Star Wars Diecast Figures...

Another wet day...sorry access is going to be restricted again today as we cannot put that much out...grumpy now.  On the plus side though we have just bought in a huge box of diecast figures and spaceships from the six Star Wars films...all your faves are here and they're all mint, sealed on card as intended...they're from the DeAgostini range - £4 each or three for just £10 (we have about thirty at the moment.

Oak Drop Leaf Tables & Bedside Furniture

We always have a good demand for small pieces of solid, vintage furniture and we're pleased to say we have a few new additions that you mind find of interest.  Head into our Pre-loved Furniture page and take a look at two smashing, solid oak drop-leaf tables - one rectangular and one oval; also three cracking bedside cabinets in a variety of styles and some terrific occasional tables.  We don't think they'll be around for long...so come down and take a look soon.

Introducing New Departments (Sub-Menus)

To cope with the all the lovely extra items we have added to the website some changes have taken place.   There are now several new departments (sub-menus) for everyone to lose themselves in.   We have introduced separate departments for Lighting; Mirrors; Clocks & Timepieces and several new rooms for specific 'arty' type things.  Follow the arrows on the drop down menus...happy browsing!

Beer...to some one of natures' greatest inventions - to others a source of endless fascination and collectable possibilities.   We are delighted to be able to offer some lovely rare breweriana including various ashtrays, jugs, trays and even genuine untouched 1980s beer.   Have a look in our collectables department for some recently discovered retro gems!

To eBay or to not eBay...

So the keen-eyed will have noticed some of our items from the shop available on eBay...DON'T buy from eBay, buy from us direct and save yourself roughly 10%!  If you buy direct from us, via Paypal, cheque or even cash we don't have to pay the extortionate eBay fees and thus we can pass the saving on to you...if in doubt email or call us during office hours; we rarely bite...hard.

A Light to Guide Your Way...

Ok, so technically it's still summer, but autumn and winter can't be far away - so what you need to chase away those dark days is a lamp...or two.  Fortunately that's just what we've bought in.  We've got some lovely retro Ikea jobbies, a Conran designed Maclamp and even something or two for the kids bedroom - head over to the tech department to see more.
